Right Place, Right Time: A Bald Eagle’s Hunt in Port Moody.

I still can't believe where I live. The fact that this incredible, raw nature is so accessible right at my door step, here in Port Moody is something I hope to never take for granted.

I had the privilege of capturing a truly wild moment this morning. It was my first time seeing a juvenile Bald Eagle target a seagull—and actually succeed. It was a rare combination of luck, good light, and having the right camera and lens in hand just as all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

In wildlife photography, there are no second chances. Everything happens in a fraction of a second, and if you aren't technically prepared, the moment is gone.

The Technical Breakdown

This series was shot with the new Sony A7 V and my go-to lens for action and wildlife, the Sony 200-600mm G.

The noise handling on the A7 V is a game-changer. Even at ISO 10,000, the feathers remain crisp and the image is incredibly clean, allowing me to maintain the high shutter speed needed for this pursuit.

  • Shutter Speed: 1/3200s

  • Aperture: f/6.3

  • ISO: 10,000
